Spring is in the air and the sun is peeking its head out from behind those rain-filled clouds. You know what this means, right? May is here! And so is Melanoma Awareness Month.
It’s often hard remembering to grab your keys in the morning, let alone wear sunscreen. But SpaFinder is making it easy for you by selling inexpensive (only $4.95) bracelets that darken to purple when exposed to dangerous UV rays. The bracelets are meant to raise awareness for early melanoma detection and prevention and have the phrase "I Will Reflect" engraved on them.
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. When recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable. However, if left undetected, it is likely to spread to other parts of the body and become significantly more dangerous. The American Cancer Society estimates that currently, about 120,000 new cases of melanoma in the US are diagnosed each year. In 2009, about 68,130 new cases were diagnosed and from those roughly 8,700 people died from the disease. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old.
Though tanning can be fun and a way give yourself that oh-so-fabulous glow, it’s important to remember to protect yourself from possible skin damage. Jersey Shore may be all about GTL, but if you're going to follow their lead you have to take an active role in preventing skin damage by wearing sun screen. Even in the winter! You’d be surprised how strong those rays are.
